In the early 1900s, 2-6-2 locomotives were developed for use on the prairies of the American Midwest, earning them the nickname "Prairies." These locomotives often outlasted their more modern and efficient counterparts in branchline operations, thanks to their relatively light weight, ability to operate effectively in reverse, and capable speed range.
