Pinewood Derby Round Weights - Easily and Safely Installed

    Posted by WJMPack53 on Jan 28th 2021

When we help design and build Cub Scout Pinewood Derby or Awana Grand Prix race cars, we use these round weights to get the cars up to the 5 ounce maximum weight. We drill 3 holes in the back of each car to accept the weights. We used a bolt cutter to remove parts of the round weight to get the to the maximum fotal of 5 ounces for the car body, wheels and axles, weight, and piant /.decals. The round weights are glued in - never fall out. Care is taken to make sure the shorter weight is in the middle drilled hole. If the car is somewhat overweight at registration time, we remove some wood from the underside of the car body near the front of the race car.. Note - not glue in the weights before determining the weight of the car. war eye protection when cutting pieces off the weights. Save the pieces for the next car.

    Easy to Use

Posted by Bill Mitchell - McFarland Cub Scout Pack 53 - Wisconsin on Jan 29th 2020

McFarland Cub Scout Pack 53 has been using round weights since these type of weights were introduced. Before cutting out the shape of the car from the block of wood, we drill 3 holes in the back of the race car - 3/8" in diameter. Care must be taken to keep the holes from showing if some wood is taken off the top of the race car. (If holes do show, we treat the holes as air intakes for the engine. We use a bolt cutter to shorten the weights if the car is too heavy. We have found that 3 holes are the best. The round weights are distributed evenly across the back. Remember, glue does add weight. If the weight of the car changes due to humidity, we drill holes in the bottom of the front of the race car to reduce weight. Our Cub Scout Pinewood Derby is always held on the Saturday before the NFL SuperBowl. A week before that Saturday, we host a Time Trials event so the Scouts and OPEN CLASS racers can get their race car up to 5 ounces. Two weekends before the Time Trials we host a race car design / cutout session at the McFarland Fire Department. The number ONE idea is 3 holes in the back using round weights, polished axles, and DO NOT GLUE in the weights until Time Trials ... McFarland Cub Scout Pack 53, McFarland, Wisconsin
